A Bible post, on a Thursday?! That's right. I have a lovely three hour break on Tuesdays and Thursdays which is perfect for reading and blogging. So, instead of waiting till Tuesday to blog about the next book, I'm bloggin it today. And yes, I know I put "bloggin".
1) Foot notes. I have a bunch of little foot notes in my Bible. Sometimes, the notes are interesting. Such as, whenever it says the Red Sea in my Bible, there is a note that says "or the Sea of Reeds". Today, in chapter 2, the spies go to the house of a prostitute. However, there is a little foot note that says "or innkeeper". Prostitute, or innkeeper. Very well could be a prostitute living in the house of the innkeeper, it just seemed like two very different people to compare in the note.
2)Oh Israelites. Do you ever learn? Seriously. You finally reach the Promised Land. And then you turn from the Lord again? Its like you have no lasting memory. Its like you are Dory from "Finding Nemo".
3) Joshua may have fought the battle of Jericho, but he fought a crazy number of other battles too. In the end, he defeated thirty-one kings.
4)Fun little note. My parents used to teach Sunday school, and we did a lot of hands-on project kinds of things. The battle of Jericho is one of my favorites. We got a old, rickety table, and built a city of cardboard boxes. We hung some red yarn from one of the boxes that would be the most stable. Then, with my dad leading us around, we pounded our fists on the table, as if we were marching. Then, on the seventh time, my dad blew the ram's horn, and we pounded on the table like crazy until all of the boxes, save the safe one, fell. And that was at least eleven years ago. But look at the impact it made. Doing things like this help kids remember, so why in schools today are kindergartners having to sit down and do work sheets? Stupid NCLB.
5)Allotment of land. This was another one of those sections that's kind of hard to get through. Interesting in how they divided the land, but not in the vast number of names that were recorded. Although, that's from my perspective. It most likely meant something more a couple of thousands of years ago. And that's the way we have to look at a lot of the Bible. We might not care about all the laws or peoples, but it meant something to them, and the laws mean something to the Jewish people now. Its all about perspective.
